Bird of the Week
Black-bellied Plover
Pluvialis squatarola
Washington's largest plover, the Black-bellied Plover, nests in the Arctic and winters on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, as far as southern Brazil. After shedding their striking breeding plumage, Black-bellied Plovers look downright subdued in winter. Look for their black axillaries, or "armpits," in flight.
Birding Site of the Week
Walla Walla River Delta
Columbia Plateau
The Walla Walla River Delta is an oasis in a huge monoculture desert of dry-land wheat farms. Consequently, it is a great place to find wintering waterfowl in abundance, especially Northern Pintails, Green-winged Teal, and American Wigeons. If the water levels are right, the expansive mudflats can attract numerous species of shorebirds. Keep an eye out for rarities!
